Withdrawal Symptoms

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

It’s a four day cycle.

Day One: The wife drops off a computer then rushes out. Next her husband is on the phone demanding both diagnosis and priority repair.

Day Two: They make several phone calls throughout the day becoming angrier, more threatening, and more abusive with each call. Their lives are at a standstill.

Day Three: Their voices on the phone are now almost incoherent, a mix of rage and swearing.

Day Four: I phone advising job now complete, and cost, only to hear, “I’m too busy. I’ll pick it up next week.”

Their cold turkey misery is over.

Nighttime Duty

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

The sound startles me from my dreams. Instead of the toasty, glowing sands succumbing to the fall of my weight, I hear the dry pricks of teensy feet against the cool tile on which my bed rests.

“What is that noise?” my wife asks.

“It’s those damned worms,” I retort, covering my ears with my damp pillow.

“Aren’t you going to kill them?” She rolls over.

I unwrap myself and step down to search for the culprits. I don’t even take a step when I hear the wet crunches. Too tired to clean my foot, I crawl back in bed.

He Dreamed Betrayal

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

Allen awoke from his morning dream reluctantly because he didn’t want to face the disturbing reality of what it might mean.

Why had he been kissing his best friend’s wife? He’d known Samantha for years, and in fact had been at the party when she first met Tim. They were perfect together. Did this dream mean that he secretly had feelings for her.

Sure, he’d been sleeping with Samantha for months, but that was just sex. It didn’t mean anything. Yet what if he actually had some affection for her. That would be a betrayal of his friendship with Tim.

After Thanksgiving

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

Kurt returned home after several hours at the bar, slightly buzzed and no longer furious at his wife. He expected the house to be spotless after that disaster of a Thanksgiving dinner.

Instead, when he opened the door into the kitchen, he discovered chaos. The entire house smelled of urine and vomit, and what might have been blood was smeared on the walls and bannister.

Fearing the worst, he ran upstairs, but although he encountered the same state of disorder, Andrea and the kids were nowhere to be seen.

What he found was that damn turkey sleeping in his bed.

The Morning Edition

by thegooddoctor in Uncategorized

Morgan Durante always dreaded reading the morning paper. The headlines were of the normally sensationalist variety, with one important caveat: this edition of the news only covered Morgan and his life.

Typical headlines read, “Durante wastes another day of worthless life at meaningless job,” and “Father does awful job parenting his gifted child.” The people quoted were usually his wife or an “Unnamed source with intimate knowledge of the Durante family.”

Morgan would have liked to stop subscribing, but it was written by his ten-year-old daughter and his wife insisted they encourage her talent. Besides, the reporting was always accurate.

Charlie Stiff

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

Charlie woke up unable to move. He wasn’t limp like a sack of potatoes that could be thrown over a shoulder. He was stiff as a metal rod.

His wife considered it a fitting retribution or all his years of unyielding stubbornness. His doctors thought they had discovered a new, more virulent strain of tetanus. Charlie didn’t care about the cause. Through clenched teeth, he tried to make it clear he just wanted a cure.

But there was no cure. Charlie Stiff spent the rest of his life frozen in place, his dreams of winning the limbo world championships destroyed.

Dueling Perspectives

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

I stumble down the street.

Everything about that night is pretty hazy.

There’s no one around. I’m completely alone.

But I couldn’t have imagined the gunshot. If everything else was a dream, that was real.

I look down to see if I’ve been shot. There’s blood on my hands.

I don’t remember seeing a gun. They said the gun was mine, but I don’t remember having one.

I don’t know where the man came from, but he’s lying on the ground.

I didn’t know until later he was sleeping with my wife.

The man is dead.

The man was dead.

The Daily Theme from Figment for April 3, 2012

Choose a significant incident in your life. The incident should be discreet, with a beginning, middle, and end (a date, a car accident, a major embarrassment). Tell the story of the incident by moving between two points of view–your perspective at the time of the incident and your perspective now. How are these two different? How does shifting between them affect the telling? Try to use these shifts in POV to show how your feelings about the event have changed over time.

Ghost Story

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

Jackson stumbled into the bathroom and flicked on the light. He jumped with a start. Samantha, his dead wife, was staring at him in the mirror.

“What are you doing here?” he asked.

“I’ve decided to haunt you.”

“Whatever you say.” Jackson went back to bed.

Samantha started following Jackson wherever he went. People often caught him talking to himself, and decided he was crazy.

It was not long before Jackson’s boss fired him. “You’re behavior lately has been unacceptable.”

“But my dead wife is haunting me.”

“Why didn’t you say so? You get used to it after a while.”
