The Good Neighbor

He waves from across the street, leaving, working nights again. Smiling, I return his wave. She watches him from the doorway, my gaze goes unnoticed.
Twilight passes, darkness falls. Lights go out in their upstairs window.
Patience. Give it time.
Minutes passing like hours.
Thinking back. Their vacation had been great, thanks for feeding the cat. Glad the new key worked.
It still works.
I fixed that squeaking door and creaking stairway for you.
Standing watch beside her, so lovely sleeping. She deserves more attention.
Sure, I’ll keep an eye on the place while you’re on graveyard shift. My pleasure.

The Messiah Complex

They had him taped to the floor. When they were holding him down and placing one piece of tape after the other, he’d smiled. Faintly so as not to be noticed, but a smile nevertheless. They didn’t have enough tape to hold a person flat to the ground.
But when they’d left him there, try as he might, he couldn’t move.
Now the water was drop-by-drop filling the small room. In a few more hours, the water would reach his nose and mouth and he’d eventually drown.
This would certainly be one of the worst ways he’d ever been killed.

Dirty Work

Selena took a cigarette from Stan with a nervous smile. It was likely too late to ingratiate herself. He knew why she was on the run and he was going to use the situation to his advantage.
Stan had worked for her husband for years. His job didn’t actually have a title, but you could call him the chief enforcer. When Richard wanted to disappear someone, he told Stan, and Stan would get one of his goons to do the dirty work.
Selena had never liked Stan. And she had been the one to get him fired.
