Gross Malpractice

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

No one had ever seen so many lawyers in one place before. It seemed their number was approaching infinity, but only because the sight was truly incomprehensible.

“I’m afraid we have some bad news. Our move to dismiss was rejected.”

“You assured me the case had no legal basis.”

“Yes, but that was before the issue of dogs was introduced. People seem pretty upset they don’t live at least as long as people.”

“The term gross malpractice is beginning to be bandied about.”

God shook his head regretfully. Maybe the whole creation thing should have been more carefully thought out.

My Favorite Song

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

My favorite song died recently. I can still hear the tune in my head, or at least the echoes of it when I’m not concentrating too hard. I fool myself it’s still alive in the world somewhere. The melody slips into my mind, like it’s drifting off my tongue or from out of my throat or maybe from inside my stomach, like heartburn.

I can’t believe I’m never going to hear my favorite song ever again.

People tell me I’ll find a new favorite song. That someday I’ll learn to love it just as much.

I hope that’s not true.

The Ascent

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

The door heaves open. Light floods me while darkness retreats inside me. The guards shove me outside my cell. On the stairs, my heart beats like a war drum. One step. Two. Many more. While my chains gently clink. At the summit, I look down and the people cheer. I see their mouths moving but I can’t hear a sound. All I hear is my panicked breath. As they take off my chains, the darkness escapes. I feel so light that I lose the ground under my feet. I smile, in the twenty-five meters that separate me from the abyss.

Titus

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

The emperor gave Titus the signal and he plunged his sword into the gladiator. Blood gushed from his neck, and he took his last gasp. The crowd chanted and Titus waved his arms in victory.

Titus’ master approached. “Well done, Titus. There hasn’t been a gladiator to match you, and I hope it stays that way.”

The ground began to rumble. The emperor’s statue fell in a heap, and people began tumbling to their deaths.

Someone in the crowd yelled. “Look at the mountain. It’s on fire!”

Mount Vesuvius spewed fire and rained pumice.

Titus would not fight another day.

Home

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

As the helicopter approached the storm-ravaged town, hundreds of people desperately watched and waited for food and supplies. I started to make the first drop and joyful screams filled the air.

The hurricane damaged houses, leaving them engulfed in water, while downed trees blocked the roads and cars had streamed down the streets into one another. Shelters were provided, but they couldn’t accommodate everyone. They needed help.

The pilot turned in my direction. “Okay, that’s the last one. Let’s go.”

I buckled my seatbelt and said a silent prayer, thanking Him that I had a place to go home to.

Next For Mel

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

“Choose.”

“What?” Mel was confused. It was 3 AM. Just moments before, he’d been pleasantly dreaming.

“You don’t know what ‘choose’ means?”

“Huh?”

“CHOOSE, MEL!”

The irritated voice seemed to come from every direction, as though from out of a whirlwind.

“AND MAKE IT SOMETHING INANIMATE.”

This was it.

“TIME’S UP.”

Mel’s life – if it could be called that – was over.

The angel had others to visit that Thursday and more important places to go.

“Couldn’t I be a dog, or a goldfish?”

“REINCARNATION’S MAINLY INTO LIFELESS OBJECTS, MEL.”

People don’t realize.

“Like…into an old basketball?”

“SO BE IT!”

The Park

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

Since the death of my father, I made it a habit to walk in his favorite park every Saturday, something we always did together. Sometimes we had a catch, until one day his hand slipped, and the ball landed in the lake with a splash, and people chortled and pointed. That’s when I knew his Parkinson’s was getting worse. Soon after, he was unable to do the things he loved, gardening being one of his fondest.

I stood by the lake and listened to the children playing when I saw something float by.

It was the ball from our catch.

Population Statistics

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

There are 7 billion people in the world and 7 billion rats. Both are social creatures, although people refuse to socialize with rats. The sight of a rat – at a wedding reception or restaurant, for example – upsets humans. But how about rats?…

“Rattus, did you know there are 7 billion people?”

“What?”

Two rats – Frank and Rattus – discussed the situation in an alley with overturned trash cans.

“7 billion.”

“You mean, as many as rats, Frank?”

“What’d you think of that, Rattus?”

“Look at the world, and some of those weddings and restaurants…I’m sorry to hear it, Frank.”

Lay Your Body Down

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

Maria watched the crowd gathered around her. It was too many people, too much forgotten history and buried resentments that she’d rather not remember. Let all of them leave her in peace.

Well not all of them. Not John. Not Heather and Tony. Even Steven was growing on her, though Maria still believed her daughter had rushed into her marriage. At least he was respectful even when Heather was too strong willed.

Everyone else could go. These last few moments should just be for the ones she truly cared about. Leave the eulogizing for after she was dead and buried.

Smalltown

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

The thing about small towns is everyone knows everyone.

There’s no secrets. Even people who think they’re good at keeping secrets don’t have any secrets.

Everyone knows who’s cheating on who. Everyone knows who’s sick and who’s pretending. Everyone knows who’s got money problems and who’s being stingy out of spite. Everyone knows who’s going away for a ‘medical procedure’ and who’s secretly having a baby.

Everyone knows who’s blood tastes the best and who’s likely to put up the most resistance and therefore isn’t worth the effort.

The thing about small towns is everyone knows who the vampires are.
