Standish

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

Tyler unfolded from the blue compact. His knees hurt. He had suffered this torture for one reason: to keep Standish quiet…forever.

Ten years as a bartender at the Capital Club, the city’s most prominent private club, provided Standish with enough knowledge to end important careers, marriages, and lives. That knowledge became an opportunity. It needed to be stopped.

Tyler walked in, silenced gun in his coat pocket. Standish was behind the bar. A shot rang out. Tyler crumpled to the floor.

“Thanks, Joe,” Standish said, smiling. A man at the end of the bar nodded, finishing his bourbon.

“Anytime.”

On The Money Trail

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

Family members need help. I oblige. I’m their doer of tasks.

Why me? I’m between jobs, behind with payments and I haven’t shopped for new clothes in ages. I guess they trust me to deliver. I’m okay with that.

No time to linger. Housebound auntie wants her groceries.

As I hasten, sunshine glues sweaty polyester to my back. I spot sparkles on the sunlit lawn along my walkway.

Coins! Many coins, strewn in a line towards the space where a car had once parked.

I gather, add up their value, sigh.

Someone’s emptied change-purse or pocket. My bit of fortune.

A Boy I Knew

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

A boy I knew killed a man. Lost his mind. Shaved his head. His face on the news was an open-mouthed scream, soundless. His eyes so round, searching. I whispered to the screen: please blink. I said it like ice in his mouth, like the way he’d look up at stars puncturing the still night sky, the cold air, too many angles of his body pushing out, knees and elbows and chin. I said it without hope. When this boy was mine, he danced and wide-smiled and kissed and laughed. His voice rang out, ethereal, hit the earth like rain.

Vines

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

Amidst the barrenness of their surroundings, they found refuge in each other’s arms. Though the winds howled and rained down upon them, they held on tight, refusing to let go. Together, they weathered the storm, their love growing stronger with each passing moment. And as the skies cleared and the sun shone, they knew they had found something special—a love that could withstand anything. Their hearts began to beat as one, like two vines interwoven, awaking a long-forgotten garden. It was as if fate had brought them together—two lost souls searching for a way out of the darkness.

Dr. Marks

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

Dr. Marks observes Tommy. “How are you feeling?”

Tommy fidgets. “Okay.”

Dr. Marks writes on her pad and then looks at Tommy again. “Tell me about your friend Sal.”

“He stands up for me when the other kids are mean. Isn’t that right, Sal?” Tommy turns to the empty chair next to him.

“Tommy, was Sal there when Charlie took your lunch?”

“Yeah, he hit him with his history book.”

Dr. Marks writes more notes.

“Tommy, you’re going to be staying here for a while.

“Me and Sal?”

Dr. Marks places a hand on Tommy’s shoulder. “Yes, you and Sal.”

Time Travel

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

For nearly three weeks, I found myself in a state of utter confusion. Despite using my usual login details, I was unable to access any of my accounts. It was as though I wasn’t myself, like something else had taken over my body. I entertained the possibility of theft or insanity, but my motherboard’s lack of responsiveness left me with more questions than answers. It reluctantly crossed my mind that I had been transported elsewhere. However, how and why I would end up there was still a mystery. These unexplainable experiences have left me feeling perplexed and uncertain. Time travel.

Chihuahuas

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

It had been raining 40 days and 40 nights. What a soggy mess.

“I told you we should’ve gotten on that Ark, Mel.”
“Stop reminding me, Harriet.”
The vessel had taken off, with the creatures two-by-two.
Then, there were those left behind.

“Would you stop looking out the window, Mel. It’s depressing.”
“I just want to see what’s going on.”
“See? Who can see anything. It must be raining cats and dogs, if I know Jehovah.”
“No. Not so many cats. But it’s amazing the number of Chihuahuas falling from the sky, Harriet.”
“My God, Mel. And floating everywhere?”
“Exactly…”

Sensitivity Training

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

Not another sensitivity seminar! The professor already kept his door open when he was with a female student. What more did they want? And who else had been sent this message from the dean? Nobody had been cc’d, so the professor forwarded the message to the entire department, the colleagues scratching their heads when they got it. Why had the professor sent them the dean’s message about sensitivity training? Each colleague checked the skeletons in his closet before flinging their doors open to the punishment of pizza stacked up against the professor’s office. One good prank deserves another, they agreed.

The Snow

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

The snow covered the land, as it had all winter. He picked his way to the rocky shore and looked longingly to the foggy sea. His sea, his love. He knew it; she should have known it.

His mother always said that snow covers sins. It was true; a blanket of white hides everything. But the snow had started to recede from the shore this past week. Today’s snow-eating fog will make short work of the rest of the snow. His sins would no longer be covered; her shallow grave will be exposed. He should head out to his love.

Fifteen Minutes

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

After a lifetime of deception, a sense of purposelessness persisted. Trapped in darkness, Sarah faced tests, time lost all meaning, hunger gnawed, and survival was vital. Guilt spiraled into self-blame. A presence loomed, with fear gripping her. A hidden cave, a reward, reality slipping, and power and control are beckoning. Uncertainty and choices lead to dark paths. Sarah complied, fearing the unknown. Urgency and the cave’s depths awaited. A dangerous allure, dread mounting. Unease, an invisible stalker, the crunch of footsteps. The weight of a gaze, fear, and defiance entwined.
