The Rise Of Quebocois Nationalism
|Pages Read: 309
Pages To Go: 669
Footnotes: 112 of 388
The stats above do not reflect the tremendous progress made over the last few weeks. That’s because while only six pages were completed in the main story line, footnote #110, which I’m sure lives in infamy among all of you accomplished souls who have actually completed Infinite Jest, was something like, and I’m just estimating here, 500 pages long.
Usually the footnotes are the least interesting bits of the story, but in DFW’s case, that is not always the case. We learn a bit more about the academic hoops that student-athletes at ETA have to jump through in the main chapter, but the footnote goes into great detail, not only about O and Hal’s relationship, but also the nitty-gritty of the separatist movement originating in Quebec.
Some people really don’t like that the three countries of North America have joined hands, and their resentment dates all the way back to the French-Indian War.
Never forget, indeed.
