Let me preface what I’m about to write by saying I don’t know what kind of addiction journey he went through, but I can just imagine a young David Foster Wallace traveling to every Boston AA location on a regular basis as part of his research for Infinite Jest. Otherwise he’s got an amazing imagination (which is probably the case either way) and a tremendous eye for detail.

Of particular note from this last bit is we finally discover the clearest connection yet between the two main story threads, when Joelle Van Dyne pops up at Don Gately’s AA chapter.

Why this happens doesn’t need an explanation. How it happens is a different story. The last I remember, JVD had committed suicide. Thankfully, she was unsuccessful.

Of course, because of the weird back and forth time jumps, her suicide could happen after she checks into rehab.
