Why I Hate Peter Jackson: Trolls 2.0 Reminds Me Of Windows Vista

What I want someone to do right now is please explain what Peter Jackson was thinking when he altered the scene with the trolls? Usually when Peter Jackson makes a change, even though I tend to disagree with reasoning, I can at least discern the reasoning. But in this case I’m stumped.

I think all fans of the book will agree with me when I say that the Troll scene is one of their favorites. It’s classic, extremely clever and much imitated. I’m not going to bore everyone by stating the obvious flaws with the Peter Jackson version. But why not just use the Tolkien version? It’s extremely cinematic.

I know that Peter Jackson wanted to make Bilbo a bit more heroic, but he could have kept the original scene, and simply switched Bilbo in for Gandalf’s role. Or they could have worked together to trick the trolls into arguing amongst themselves. And this would have given Peter Jackson more opportunity to film some action. The trolls start fighting each other a couple of times and break into fisticuffs. Maybe the dwarves attempt an escape while they are distracted, before getting recaptured. And then there’s some passage of time before the sun comes up.

Because the way it is now, one troll complains that he doesn’t want to get caught out in the sun and turned to stone, and then one minute later, they get turned to stone! Gandalf didn’t even need to crack the rock. It didn’t appear that the trolls were anywhere near to returning to their cave.

This is one of those unforgivable choices that, sadly, Peter Jackson is all too well-known for.
