Why I Hate Peter Jackson: The Good Parts Only Make It Worse

If everything about the movies were awful, then they wouldn’t be so bad. Does that make sense?

The conversation between Balin and Thorin provides us important insight into the latter’s character. He is too proud and cares too much about his people to ever give up the fight to return them to their rightful kingdom. He is stern but honorable. And we learn that not because Gandalf gives a speech telling us, but because Balin asks him why they can’t just settle for the lives they have now. It’s exactly the opposite of the earlier part of the scene, and knowing that this kind of proper storytelling is mixed in with all the drivel makes the whole debacle that much more depressing.

I wish that Thorin could have remained this awesome for the whole movie. Sadly, we have more than two hours left to go, and Peter Jackson is still the director.
