Why I Though Wonder Woman 1984 Was Better Than The Original

Here’s what I don’t like about the criticism of WW1984: The same problems that are being pointed out most often (convoluted plot, 3rd act problems) can be found in many of the classics of the genre. The Dark Knight has third act problems. So does X2. Don’t get me started on the strange motivations of Arnim Zola in Winter Soldier.

Yes, Wonder Woman 1984 has some problems. It is not a perfect movie. But it’s hard to argue that the villains aren’t better developed than Ares in the first WW movie. I really enjoyed both Kristen Wiig and Pedro Pascal. And I’ll never get tired of the screwball comedy vibe that Gal Gadot and Chris Pine seem to excel at.

I thought the movie was fun. It was lighthearted (for the most part) and funny and all the main actors oozed charisma. Do I wish they’d spent a bit more time coming up with a tighter script, and they hadn’t left Cheetah hanging in the third act? Yes. Yes I do.

But for all the problems, it was still my second favorite DCU movie of 2020, and that’s got to count for something.
