Roundtable Discussion On Scriptwriting: Let’s Hope Someone Brings Up Batman And Robin

I think one of the ways to gauge how obsessed you are with writing is to calculate how much time you’re willing to spend listening to other writers talk about writing. The more time spent, the more obvious that writing is your true calling.

I always try to approach other writers with an open mind. It’s very easy for either defensiveness or ego to seep in (sometimes these may be the same thing) and to dismiss what they have to say. Oh, I already do that. Or, I learned that way back in university. Or, He’s obviously a hack. Don’t let your pride get in the way of learning something new. If someone has succeeded at your dream job, they have something to teach you. Even Dan Brown has something to offer (unless you’re trying your best NOT to make millions and millions of dollars).

Here’s an interesting roundtable discussion from the Hollywood Reporter on Scriptwriting. The panel is comprised of superstar screenwriters George Clooney, Grant Heslov, Julie Delpy, Nicole Holofcener, John Ridley, Danny Strong, and Jonas Cuaron. If for nothing else, it’s fun to watch Clooney out charm everyone in the room. I particularly enjoyed listening to them speak about overcoming early obstacles and self-doubts.
