The stats above do not reflect the tremendous progress made over the last few weeks. That’s because while only six pages were completed in the main story line, footnote #110, which I’m sure lives in infamy among all of you accomplished souls who have actually completed Infinite Jest, was something like, and I’m just estimating here, 500 pages long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Usually the footnotes are the least interesting bits of the story, but in DFW’s case, that is not always the case. We learn a bit more about the academic hoops that student-athletes at ETA have to jump through in the main chapter, but the footnote goes into great detail, not only about O and Hal’s relationship, but also the nitty-gritty of the separatist movement originating in Quebec. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some people really don’t like that the three countries of North America have joined hands, and their resentment dates all the way back to the French-Indian War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never forget, indeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
