I’m three pages in, no page or chapter break in sight, and there’s already a lot to write about. Thought I should pause to take a breath and jot down a few early impressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DFW (that’s my nickname for David Foster Wallace) definitely has a unique style. I should have mentioned previously that I have read one collection of his short stories, Girl With Curious Hair, so I have some familiarity with his writing already. I liked the collection and admired his voice. It’s been a couple years, so I can’t say too much about them now, but I remember enjoying some stories quite a bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyway, I’m struck by the description. I wonder if DFW or anyone actually sees the world in this manner, with this level of detail. I rather think most people let most of these types of details wash over them and get lost in their own thoughts and internal dialogues. I know that’s the case with me at least.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With so many details, it’s hard to understand exactly what the situation is, but I gather Hal, our narrator, is seeking entrance into the University of Arizona on a tennis scholarship. He’s making me work for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I enjoy the fact that Hal has not yet said anything, and the adults around him have taken it upon themselves to speak for him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am assuming that the Infinite Jest is some sort of commentary on the human condition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The joke is on all of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
