A lot of exposition (much of which already got established in the opening montage) followed by a speech from Gandalf on why they needed Bilbo along on the trip. Peter Jackson is breaking the first rule of storytelling: Show don&#8217;t tell. If we hadn&#8217;t mostly wasted the first 27 minutes, we wouldn&#8217;t need to have a speech establishing the main bit of character growth we&#8217;re going to get from Bilbo.
