The husband settled in to read; the wife paced the room unsettled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if,\u201d she said, then paused at the window, watching the rain lash against the panes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHmmn?\u201d He responded, bookmarking his place with a finger to listen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if,\u201d she continued, contemplating the unleashing storm, \u201cwe got a divorce?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you angry, disappointed, frustrated, sad, or joking?\u201d he asked in reply.<\/p>\n<p>She turned to then contemplate him. \u201cDoes it matter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever you want,\u201d he said, and returned to reading his book.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Melissa Ridley Elmes <\/p>\n<p>Melissa is a Virginia native currently living in Missouri in an apartment that delightfully approximates a hobbit-hole.
