She smells of lavender perfume and sweat. Not like Dad with his Old Spice, calculated aroma, who mocks Mother. Arranges my future with Headmaster Edgar. Harvard, law.<\/p>\n

Men bang at the doors. Buzzwords waft into my musky space: \u201cCustody arrangement,\u201d \u201cLegal orders.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fuck off. Mother\u2019s words hold firmness, edge.<\/p>\n

Footsteps draw near, unpleasant pounding.<\/p>\n

My mother tells them I\u2019m her son. I\u2019m someone who needs love.<\/p>\n

I absorb that word, so foreign, while she spars, words rising.<\/p>\n

Love. What beautiful form.<\/strong><\/p>\n
