Mrs. Meyer, who lives opposite, opens her door. Though he\u2019s eleven, the kind old lady still gives him candy.<\/p>\n<p>However, seeing the two Gestapo officers with her, Johan hides.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father was German,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Reich is grateful,\u201d they reply.<\/p>\n<p>Soldiers arrive. Knocking down their front door, they drag out his parents and the family in the attic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJew-loving Dutch swine!\u201d says a soldier, spitting at his father.<\/p>\n<p>Johan never sees them again.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes meet Mrs. Meyer\u2019s, peering out from between her curtains.<\/p>\n<p>He never forgets her look of triumphant malice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>From Guest Contributor Ian Fletcher<\/p>\n<p>Born and raised in Cardiff, Wales, Ian has an MA in English from Oxford University.
