The Glue

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

Victor Coolidge often referred to himself as the glue that held the city together (the joke being the reason he was so obese was that a city of one billion people needed a lot of glue). In the end, he was the snag that lead to the city coming apart at the seams.

When he told his media friends that Georgi was the infant predator, they seized on the story. A manhunt began. Top-levels began dying in the vents. The riots spread to the sewers and the ground levels.

Georgi became the eye of the hurricane that finally destroyed Colossopolis.

Part 5

This is the treatment for a sci-fi novella. I think it’s definitely worthy of more than the 100-word treatment. Let me know what you think!

The Vents

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

In Colossopolis, the slums and sewers were home to escaped convicts, perverts, and the debt-afflicted–the least desirable elements of society. Most of the city’s population would never see the sewers in their lifetimes.

Such people had never even heard of the vents.

The vents were for the mutants and genkies who had nowhere else to go. There was a division of Justice that specialized in going into the vents to retrieve wanted criminals or especially valuable contraband. They had an 82% success rate of coming back alive.

Georgi was born in the vents and he didn’t want to go back.

Nerve

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

She waited in the closet while tightly clutching the letter opener to her chest. She’d never killed anyone–never come close really, unless you count the car accident and she’d been drunk so she never did. But she was going to kill Stan, or at least hurt him really bad. She knew she had to do it quickly, as soon as the door opened, because if she saw his face she’d lose her nerve. Not that he didn’t deserve to die, but she’d be too scared.

She heard footsteps, so she stood next to the door, her whole body tense.

The Letter Opener

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

As the minutes stretched on, Selena wondered how long she would be abandoned in the dark. She could hear distant shouting and decided to look for a means of escape.

Throwing herself against the door convinced her she’d never be able to barge her way free and instead she began searching through the contents of the closest. Richard had kept a revolver in an old shoebox, but she had gone for that immediately and it was no longer there.

Other than the books and files, there was little that could prove useful. Until she found the letter opener.

Mutiny

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

Stan dragged Selena by the elbow through the front door of the mansion house. They both knew something was wrong. There wasn’t anyone to be seen, not even a body, as if the house had been abandoned.

“Looks like we have a mutiny on our hands.” Stan slapped her across the face, but the sting was worth getting him to lower his mask of detachment. Stan forced her up to Richard’s office and locked her in the closet.

“I’ll come back for you later.”

Selena sat down on a stack of unread books and plotted her escape.

Misdirection

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

Stan took Selena’s proposal as nothing more than a desperate joke, or perhaps a flailing attempt to save herself from his vengeance. But in reality it was only meant as a distraction. Selena wanted him to believe she was scared and desperate. She wanted him to underestimate her again.

“Til’ death do you part, Selena? Richard would have expected you to at least shed a tear on his behalf.”

“Richard never cared about me. He never appreciated me, not the way you do, right Stan?”

“It’s not going to work.”

Selena smiled. It already was working.

Silence

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

The drive back to the mansion house was long. Selena found it unendurable, but not because of what was waiting for her.

It was the silence she couldn’t abide. She abhorred silence. She needed music or television playing in the background at all times or she’d fill the emptiness with whatever twitter occurred to her in the moment. Most people found the chatter annoying, but Richard had thought it endearing, which was odd, because for the most part he hated anyone who talked too much in his presence.

The fact Richard was dead made the silence especially interminable.

What Happened To Richard

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

Selena had little choice but to go back with Stan. She would just tell Richard that she’d gotten scared and didn’t want to get caught in the middle of a war. Her leaving had nothing to do with her having betrayed the both of them to a competing crime boss. Why would he ever think that?

Selena slid into the Cadillac and told Stan to drive. “Don’t try anything, or Richard will be even angrier than he already is.”

“Richard’s dead. I shot him myself.”

Selena knew that if she didn’t get away quickly, she’d be next.

Advantages

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

It didn’t have to be that way. Stan wanted her. Even now it was obvious. Maybe it had never been to Richard, who had been too busy indulging his taste for punishment. And everyone else was too scared to see anything but the inside of their own asses, but she knew it the first time he raked his eyes over her. Stan wanted everything that had ever belonged to Richard and that included her.

He could have sent someone else to fetch her back, but he wanted to find her himself. She would use his lust to her advantage.

Natural Enemies

by thegooddoctor in 100 Words

Richard Gunn was the head of the largest crime syndicate in the four corners area. He commanded a cadre of drug dealers, bookies, gun smugglers, and union thugs that was able to operate openly because he also owned a third of the police force and elected officials.

Richard was famous for his temper. He once scrambled the brains of the cook at his favorite restaurant because his eggs had been undercooked. He was surrounded by yes men and sycophants.

The only people brave enough to question his authority were Selena and Stan. This naturally made them enemies.
